Chapter History

The Tau Alpha Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority Incorporated was born from the vision of a group of women to create a support group for women of various backgrounds at Northwestern University. The search for an organization that coincided with their collective vision began in the Spring of 1998 when several individuals contacted various Greek organizations to speak to a group of interests at Northwestern University. After much searching, the women unanimously decided on beginning a chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma.

On June 24, 1999, the National Board of Directors recognized the interest group at Northwestern University as an official colony of Sigma Lambda Gamma. On February 19, 2000, the National Board notified the Northwestern Colony of their promotion to the Tau Alpha Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma. With this promotion to chapter status, the women sought recognition from Northwestern University and after many weeks of hard work, eventually, became the first Latina-based sorority on its campus and the first multicultural Greek organization to gain recognition from the school.

On May 27, 2000, eight women crossed into the sisterhood of Sigma Lambda Gamma. At this moment, these eight women - Rosalinda Alvarado, Esther Contreras, Carmen Dominguez, Rosemary Kay Suarez-Guzmán, Joy Marie Matias, Erica Návar, Michelle Marie Noda, and Yesenia Salcedo - became the official founders of Sigma Lambda Gamma Tau Alpha Chapter.

On December 3, 2000, Tau Alpha's Founding Line initiated their First Line - Tania Condarco, Antonia Garcia, and Bobbie Rivelli - into the Sigma Lambda Gamma sisterhood which continues to grow. Currently, Sigma Lambda Gamma is the largest Latina-based sorority on Northwestern's campus and nationwide.

Sigma Lambda Gamma Tau Alpha Chapter was the first Latina-based sorority and first multicultural Greek-lettered organization recognized by Northwestern University.
